Winter 2011 Trend Report: Animal Hats

While in New York this month, I realized something popping up on people's heads more than usual. Typically these hats can be seen on small children- not teenagers and adults. What am I talking about? Animal hats. That's the only way I can describe them. Here's a photo of some at a vendor on a street corner in New York. I believe they were being sold for about $7 a piece.
You can also purchase them form a variety of stores such as; Urban Outfitters, Berkeley Hats, Shop Animal Hats, and I'm sure you can find many more!

Sweet Sale: Benefit The Fab Lane

Benefit is great for offering really amazing value sets! Most companies advertise a set as a huge value, but really it never is as good a value. Recently I was at Ulta picking up a few early holiday gifts. The huge front display is one for Benefit and of course I looked at the goodies. :) I noticed a giftset in a box similar to the Some Beauty to Love set, which I do own. You can buy it at Ulta stores, or Ulta.com.
This set includes:
Hoola Bronzer ($28 value)
BADgal Mascara ($19 value)
That Gal Primer ($28 value)

Overall this set is a $75 value, and you're getting it for only $49, so basically you're saving $26, or getting Hoola or That Gal free. If you're looking for a good holiday giftset, this is a great value for a friend, sister, mom, whoever!

Yay or Nay? Cynthia Rowley Band-aids

Cynthia Rowley has recently released something new, Bandaids! This limited edition pack is available on the Cynthia Rowley site for $10. 20 assorted bandaids are included. I know as a little girl, I had to have 'pretty' band-aids. ie. princess bandaids.
As a young adult, if I get a cut, I stick with plain bandaids. This would be a fun gift for your friend that's always hurt! Or, if you're feeling fun- go for it! What do you think? Yay or Nay?

Review: Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Redness Soothing Gentle Scrub

My new favorite facial wash is most definately the Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash, Redness Soothing Gentle Scrub. I use this the most in my skincare routine, and it has corrected my skin for sure! I had been using the Clinique 3-Step Skincare System for over 5 months, with no real improvement in my skin. I am still using the moisturizer, but gave the wash and toner to my sister.

This scrub is not very exfoliaitng, making it perfect for everyday use. This scrub is available for $7.99 on drugstore.com. This tube contains 4.2 fl oz and is 2% salicylic acid acne treatment. What I really enjoy about this is the scent, I feel that it smells like pears, which is weird. The soothing aloe and chamomile won't jolt you up if you use this at night. Overall I really love using this! It seems that it has begun to fade my scarring, and there is less redness and irritation overall on my skin. Neutrogena also offers a facial wash and cream cleanser in the redness soothing line.

Review: Bath & Body Works Wallflowers

One thing I had always seen, but never bought were the Bath & Body Works Wallflowers. In a variety of scents from Autumn Apple to Warm Vanilla Sugar, there is sure to be a scent you love. B&BW claims that these will last for 6-8 weeks plugged in 24/7.

So what is a wallflower? It's an adorable pluggable fragrance diffuser that releases scent from the top. There are also a variety of shapes on your wallflower ranging from white night lights to Santa Claus! Plain 'flower' wallflowers are $6.50, and festive lady bugs, pumpkins, and more are $8.50-$12.50. As for the scent bulbs- individual bulbs are available for $6.50 You can also buy a pack of 2 for $12.50 (save $0.50)
I would recommend putting your wallflower in a smaller space- ie. bathroom or closet because the scent throw isn't that great, and you wouldn't smell it as well if it was in a larger room (or so I have found)

I put a Warm Vanilla Sugar bulb into my wallflower in an outlet in my bathroom on August 31st. I had it plugged in 24/7 until October 11 when there was no more fragrance oil in the bulb at all. So it lasted 5 weeks and 6 days. Not too bad considering it is advertised as lasting 6-8 weeks. When it's plugged in you can't smell it too much unless you are standing right next to it, then again it might have just been that the scent I had was not very heavy.

Overall, I would recommend this for use in a small space, but get a strong scent!

Review: Buxom Stay-There Eyeshadow

Buxom is the daughter line from Bare Escentuals that offers a line of plumping, and long lasting makeup. This Sephora exclusive is available for $17 and contains 0.12oz of mineral-infused shadow. What I feel makes this unique is the mousse consistency, but it applys and looks like powder shadow. This is because it is infused with aloe extract and vitamin-E. The cute canine name named after different dog breeds makes it all the more fun and tie-in with Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that helps those with disabilities by providing them with assistance dogs.

This shadow is also formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrance, phthalates, GMOs, andtriclosans. The name suggests that it will 'stay-there' and it does, all day long! Usually I apply my makeup around 7:15 and I won't get home until after school, and soccer practice which is usually around 11 hours later. The smooth and airy texture is absolutely divine and unlike any other shadow I have tried before! I adore this shadow so much and I would definitely recommend it!

Lots of Love!

Review: Eucerin Calming Creme

I bought this to try and get rid of the red razor bumps/eczema on my knees. It's especially annoying because I wear a skirt to school as part of my uniform a majority of days! Now down to the nitty gritty:

-8oz
-$7.99
-Fragrance Free
-Dermatologist tested
-Non comedogenic

The soothing oatmeal cream has made the red bumps go away more and more each day! Applying this every day after shaving just on my knees has significant;y reduced the size and color of these bumps. The results don't come over night- but over a period of time! I'm sure that with continued use over time it will help keep the bumps at bay!

Meeting Elle & Blair Fowler

Yesterday I was so excited to travel to New York with my mom and sister, and I got the amazing oppurtunity to meet Elle (allthatglitters21) & Blair (juicystar07) Fowler, the fabulous youtube dynamic duo! The meet up was held at the Maybelline Pop-Up Store at 1701 Broadway&54th from 3-5pm. We got there at 2:30 andwaited in line until 4:15 until actually being able to meet them! They also twittered that there were a total of 445 people there! There were many girls walking around in CVS white tops giving updates on the line as well as face charts we could get signed by Elle & Blair. There was also a camera crew, and someone who seemed like he was a producer? Not exactly sure for what- I will update when I find out. There was also a girl with a smaller video camera filming the crowd for Elle & Blair's personal videos. It was also raining and 60 degrees outside, but everyone stuck around!

We were sent inside in groups, and each person could go up individually and talk with them for a minute or two, take a photo with them, and get an autograph. Elle & Blair had mentioned that it was possible for us to stick around afterwards, but when I asked some of the people working why there was a group sitting inside, they said they had won a contest of some sort and were waiting to talk with them after?

Overall it was really fun, even though I just got to talk with them for a minute! They were so sweet, and they are even more gorgeous in person then online! (Blair even told me that she had the same shirt I did but in maroon :)

Picture time!
The crowd outside!

A sign outside.

The sign on the door outside, note they spelled their last name w
rong. Folwer instead of Fowler.

The set-up inside! We had just finished talking with them!

My signed face chart! (Blair signed on the left, Elle on the right.)

Elle, Blair, me, and my sister!

The quality isn't that good because they were taken on my Blackberry. The smiley face over my sister is there because she didn't want her face shown.

Review: Neutrogena Body Clear Pink Grapefruit Body Wash

This body wash is formulated with Neutrogena's MicroClear technology, and is 100% naturally derived from grapefruit extract. This 8.5 fl oz wash is sold for $7.99 on drugstore.com This is specially created to clear body acne.
This is 2% salicylic acid which is an active acne fighting ingredient. I like to apply a little dollop onto a back brush. It doesn't over dry which is great! It does lather, but not a thick lather, and it smells awesome! I think it does a pretty good job of clearing up your skin. This also includes Vitamin C which is great for brightening your skin. I do like this for days when my back can break out. I sometimes even use it when I am not broken out because I love the smell.

Review: Neutrogena Night Calming Makeup Remover Wipes vs. Original

My favorite brand of makeup remover wipes would definitely have to be Neutrogena. Neutrogena makes a few different kinds of removers, but I have only tried the original and night calming. Both can be purchased at drugstore.com. The Night Calming is on the site for $7.49, the Original is $7.99. Each pack comes with 25 wipes that are 19x18.5 cm each. All Neutrogena makeup remover wipes are ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested. They are also allergy and alcohol free.

The Night Calming has a scent of lavender and chamomile- hence night calming as studies have shown that those scents are soothing and help some sleep. When it comes to actual makeup removal- they pretty much do the same thing- and one is not better than the other, it's more personal preference. Both claim to even remove waterproff mascara, which some remover wipes do not, and I wake up with black flakes under my eyes if the night before I don't also use liquid eye makeup remover. I like the original better because sometimes the smell can kind of annoy me, but the scent never irritates my skin.

Yay or Nay? Angelina Jolie's Bangs

On this months cover of Vanity Fair, Angelina Jolie states that her daughter Shiloh wants to be a boy, which is shown in some of the outfits and short hair the 4 year old has been rocking lately. But what I don't like that much about the cover was her very retro- side swept looking bangs. I'm thinking yay! Her bangs frame her face beautifully and make her great bone structure stand out.

What do you think- Yay Or Nay?

Tip du Jour: Top Skincare Tips

1. Change your pillow cases and wash them weekly, A lot of bacteria, germs, and oils collect in your pillow case from your hair, skin, and hands.

2. Wipe your cell phone down with anti- bacterial wipes. If you wear makeup- some will wipe off and bacteria collects on your cell phone keys!

3. Probably the simplest thing to do, is remove your makeup at night with makeup remover wipes, this will prevent future breakouts and keep your skin clear.

4. Wash, Tone, and Moisturize! If you have specific acne problems such as black heads or white heads, many creams, washes, and moisturizers are available for your skin type.

5. Do not stress! Try doing something relaxing like a long bubble bath, yoga, pilate's, shopping, or whatever else relaxes you! Stress can lead to breakouts as well as dandruff, lack of sleep, etc.

Glam It Yourself: Candles

While on vacation visiting family- I was able to do something really cool that I have never done before; make my own candles! I saw candles all over my cousin's house and my aunt's house from a company (not mentioning the name, it is only in their state) so we decided to take a trip to the store! I made two of my own 8 oz. candles for $9 each- which I think is not a bad price! At this store, you could either buy them in 8 oz. glass jars, or make blend your own in a variety of sizes! You could also buy 4 candles in 4 oz. jars for $21 in a theme (Romantic, Beach, etc.) I blended 3 different oils with a natural soy base- came back an hour later, and voila! I had two custom blended candles.

Brown Sugar+Cinnamon+Sugar Cookie= Snickerdoodle Cookie

Here are a few links to DIY candle shops that I found websites for, as well as tutorials to make your own candles. Tip of the Day: 5 Back To School Tips

Whether you're in 5th grade or 12th grade, everyone is going back to school. Where I live- school starts after labor day (September 7th) Here are a few (beauty & fashion related) tips for school!

1. Never get a wax, or facial the day before school starts. Facials will usually bring all impurites out and you will breakout for a little, and waxing can cause redness and irritation.
2. Don't get a new hair-do before you have some time to experiment and find what works for you.
3. Break in shoes at least 4 days ahead of time so you won't get blisters and be uncomfortable all day.
4. Don't stress about...well anything! Stress could cause breakouts, and no one wants that. :)
5. Schools can be germy, so carry around or keep in your locker some hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer can be very drying to your hands- so try to keep some lotion around too.

Any additions? Feel free to comment!

Fall 2010 Trend Report: 50s & 60s Fun

Even though I don't watch it- I'm sure many people watch the AMC original series Mad Men. Set in Manhattan, New York in the 1960s. This movie not only is set around the rising advertising business, but fashion as well. After some research, my 3 favorites are Betty the sophisticate, Joan the risk taker, and Peggy the prim girl next door.

In the cover article about Demi Lovato & Joe Jonas in the August copy of Teen Vogue, their cover story photo shoot entitled Blue Crush reminded me a lot of what the characters in Grease wore- my favorite photo (The Girl Next Door) shows Demi in a Chloe sweater, Opening Ceremony skirt, CC Skye bracelet, and Pour La Victoire shoes.

In Vogue, the mother of all magazines- and the big sister to Teen Vogue- the spread that really caught my eye was titled Magnificent OBSESSION. The 14 page spread features Ewan McGregor and Natalie Vodianova in an autumn 50s 'domestic drama' Not only did Natalie look great, but so did Ewan and their 'children' I feel as if the stereotypical 1950s domestic life is captured in this photo- but in a Prada silk-radzimir dress, shoes, and handbag of course!

Review: L.A. Girl FineLine Liquid Liner

I have never previously tried any of the products from the L.A. Girl line, and was eager to try! The liner is available on the L.A. Girl website for $7.00. This liner is not tested on animals, cruelty free, and paraben-free. This is also ophthalmologist tested.

I have never tried a liquid liner pen such as this, only a brush liner such as the MAC liquidlast, or the Urban Decay liquid liner which are the only 2 liquid liners I have tried. This liner is great! It stays on all day! Sometimes, I do have some trouble with applying liquid liners, and it might get a little out of 'line.' It doesn't leak out anywhere, and the product isn't messy. Overall I really like this product and could most likely be my new favorite liquid liner!

Fall 2010 Trend Report: Lip Stains...with a balm

In many major magazines- I have recently found lots of articles, ads, etc. about lip stains- and especially lip stains with built-in-balms. Mainly- the Tarte LipSurgence's and the Revlon Just Bitten- which there are ads for left and right! Lip stains are common, but stains with a balm are less common to find. *All ideas are my own- although influenced by writers at magazines*

$24 0.1oz
Just like the original (featured below)- but the matte stain. This is available in six colors ranging from mauve berry to hot pink. LipSurgence Clinical Results prove that there is a 6000% increase in lips' moisture content after 28 days. This formulation is free of;
-Parabens
-Sulfates
-Synthetic Fragrance
-Synthetic Dyes
-Petrochemicals
-Phthalates
$24 0.08oz
Similar to a jumbo lip crayon, but this one rolls up and is available in 6 shades. This is clinically proven to increase moisture content in your lips by 6000% after 28 days. This formulation is free of;
-Parabens
-Sulfates
-Synthetic Fragrance
-Synthetic Dyes
-Petrochemicals
-Phthalates
-GMOs
-Triclosan
$8.99 0.09oz
Available in 10 shades, this has the look of a traditional lip stain marker. This uses ColorStay technology in a dual ended applicator. One end is a translucent, light weight balm, the other- the marker stain. This contains vitamin C for anti-oxidant protection. First apply your marker- then for added moisture and shine, apply the balm.
$20 0.23oz
A spinoff of Benefit's Classic Benetint lip and cheek stain. This time, they have taken all the goodness of Benetint, and combined the tint with an ultra hydrating balm all in a cute lacquer pot. This even has SPF 15, and Vitamin E with light rose fragrance.

Fall 2010 Trend Report: Gray Nails

This fall, a trend that will be 'in' is gray nail polishes. As seen on the L’Wren Scott Fall 2010 runway was was a custom blended slate- blue nail polish by Lancôme. The exclusive shade is rumored to hit beauty counters by the end of this year & works perfectly with a smoky eye.

Chanel $23
In Chanel's fall collection (available now!) one new Le Vernis Nail Colour is being launched, and that is Paradoxal- a plum gray retailing at $23. Chanel cosmetics are popular with their trend setting especially in their nail polishes (if you haven't heard/read/seen the hype over Jade polish, it's a beautiful Jade green polish which I must get my hands in soon!) *Featured on the Chanel Fall 2010 runways*

OPI $8.50
This fall OPI is also launching a new gray toned line of polishes in their Swiss Fall 2010 Collection. This line will feature 12 new gray toned polishes, but Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous is certainly the way to go with the gray polish trend! It is available in full size for $8.50, but also in the Irre-Swiss-Ables Mini set. This is all set to launch August 1.

Sally Hansen $6.99
If you're looking for a more inexpensive polish, you've found one in Sally Hansen Gray by Gray. This polish is a slate with some blue-infused sheen. This is as far as I know- available year round at a drugstore nearest you! This is also a dupe for the custom Lancôme shade pictured above.

What do you think? A hit or miss trend?
